Data Quality Dashboards Using Web Intelligence Documents

I am not a huge fan of the data quality reporting functionality provided within Information Steward.  The reporting structure is rigid and lacks flexibility to enable detailed reporting and analysis.  For instance, it would be great if we could report data quality scores by Plant or other organizational dimensions, or have the ability to drill down to different organizational levels for detailed analysis.  It is also difficult to communicate this information to users; not every business user has access to the Information Steward application.  This post will discuss the approach I designed for a much more comprehensive reporting solution for data quality reporting.

As the solution architect for my company’s DQM project I was tasked with developing a more comprehensive reporting solution to enable this functionality.  This solution provided automated, end-to-end reporting which utilized SAP Data Services, Information Steward, SQL Server, and BusinessObjects BI.

Below is an example of our highest level “dashboard”.  I use quotes because the report is actually built in a Web Intelligence document.  After building several prototypes in Web Intelligence, SAP Lumira, and SAP Dashboards it became clear Web Intelligence was the most agreeable reporting tool.

Some of the basic requirements are listed below:

  • Report the following measures:
    • Total records
    • Total failed records
    • Data quality score
  • Include additional dimensions such as:
    • Plant
    • Company Code
    • Business Process
    • Sub process
    • Data Owner
    • Week
  • Ability to assign “data owners” to individual records
  • Drill-down to more detailed reports
  • Show week-over-week trend indicators and line graphs

The report was designed to mimic a dashboard.
